Even though Maʿmar was trustworthy and firmly grounded, he did make mistakes—especially when he travelled to Basra to visit his mother. As he had none of his notebooks with him, he narrated from memory, and the Basrans consequently recorded a number of errors from him.
The reports that Hishām and ʿAbd al-Razzaq transmit from him are more accurate, for they took what they heard from his written collections—and Allah knows best.
Muhammad ibn Jawhar al-Muqriʾ informed us; Yūsuf ibn Khalīl informed us; Masʿūd al-Ṣālḥānī informed us. (ḥ)
Ahmad ibn Salāmah likewise informed us, on the authority of Masʿūd: Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād informed us; Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn Ahmad narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm al-Dabarī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated to us, from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever peeps in on a people inside their house without their permission, it has become lawful for them to gouge out his eye.” (1)
With this chain: from Maʿmar, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Prophet ﷺ said, “If the one who drinks while standing knew what was inside his stomach, he would vomit it up.” (2)
And with this chain: from Maʿmar, from Hammām, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The evil eye is real, and he forbade tattooing.” (3)
