He narrated from al-Aʿraj, al-Ḥārith ibn Yazīd, Darrāj the preacher, Khālid ibn Abī ʿImrān, and others.
Among those who narrated from him were Abū Ghassān Muḥammad ibn Muṭarrif, al-Layth ibn Saʿd, Ibn al-Mubārak, Abū Zurārah al-Layth ibn ʿĀṣim al-Qitbānī, and many others.
He was counted among the scholars who issued legal opinions.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and a group of authorities declared him trustworthy, and Abū Dāwūd said, “He enjoyed a notable standing.”
Al-Layth ibn ʿĀṣim related: “At daybreak I saw him wrap his shin with a strip of tow (1) and flax-seed because of the long hours he spent standing in night prayer—may Allah have mercy on him.”
The ḥāfiẓ Ibn Yūnus remarked: “He was one of the devoted, strenuous worshippers.”
He died in Alexandria in 154 AH. In that same year passed away Abū ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAlāʾ, Jaʿfar ibn Burqān, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir, Qurrat ibn Khālid, al-Ḥakam ibn Abān, and Saʿīd ibn Yazīd al-Qitbānī.

The Imām, exemplar, Shaykh al-Islam: Abū Ayyūb al-Shaʿbānī, the Ifriqiyan, judge of Ifriqiyah, its scholar and ḥadith authority—despite weakness in his memory.
He transmitted from his father, Bakr ibn Sawādah, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥublī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Rāfiʿ al-Tanūkhī (a companion of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr), Abū ʿUthmān al-Miṣrī (a companion of Abū Hurayrah), Muslim ibn Yasār, Ziyād ibn Nuʿaym, and several other Successors.
Transmitters from him include Ibn Wahb, Abū Usāmah, Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn, Yaʿlā ibn ʿUbayd, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqriʾ, and many others.
