Misʿar ibn Kidām said, “I saw Abū Ḥanīfah recite the entire Qur’an in a single rakʿah.”
Ibn Samāʿah reported—through Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan from al-Qāsim ibn Maʿn—that Abū Ḥanīfah once spent an entire night standing in prayer, repeating the Almighty’s words, “Rather, the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour will be more calamitous and more bitter” (Q 54:46), weeping and beseeching his Lord until dawn.
It has been transmitted through multiple chains that Imām Abū Ḥanīfah was beaten more than once for refusing to accept the judgeship, yet he never complied.
Yazīd ibn Hārūn said, “I have never seen anyone more forbearing than Abū Ḥanīfah.”
Ḥasan ibn Ziyād al-Luʾluʾī related that Abū Ḥanīfah said, “If a judge accepts a bribe, he is deposed, even if no formal removal is issued.”
Nūḥ al-Jāmiʿ narrated that Abū Ḥanīfah said, “Whatever reaches us from the Messenger ﷺ we honor above all; what comes from the Companions, we examine and choose; and as for anything beyond that, they are men and we are men.”
Wakīʿ said, “I heard Abū Ḥanīfah state, ‘Urinating in the mosque is better than some kinds of analogy (qiyās).’”
Abū Yūsuf reported that Abū Ḥanīfah said, “A man should transmit only what he has preserved exactly as he heard it.”
Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Darīr said, “Love for Abū Ḥanīfah is part of the sunnah.”
Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm al-Zuhri reported from Bishr ibn al-Walīd: Al-Manṣūr summoned Abū Ḥanīfah, determined to appoint him as judge, and swore that he would indeed take the post. Abū Ḥanīfah refused and swore, “I will not do it.” Al-Rabīʿ the chamberlain exclaimed, “Do you see the Commander of the Believers swearing an oath while you too swear an oath?” He replied, “The Commander of the Believers is better able to expiate his oath than I am.” So he ordered Abū Ḥanīfah to be imprisoned, and he died there in Baghdad. It is also said that Abū Jaʿfar handed him over to his chief of police, Ḥumayd al-Ṭūsī, who cried out, “O shaykh!”
