Allah’s forbearance toward you; beware instead of His anger, for He has said, “When they provoked Our wrath, We took vengeance on them” (az-Zukhruf: 56).

ʿUmar ibn Dharr also said, “Every sorrow wears away—except the sorrow of one who repents of his sins.”

Ibrāhīm ibn Bashshār related: Ibn ʿUyaynah told us, “Whenever ʿUmar ibn Dharr recited, ‘Master of the Day of Judgment,’ he would exclaim, ‘Ah, what a Day that will be! How the very thought of you fills the hearts of the truthful!’ ”

Hāmid ibn Yaḥyā, quoting Ibn ʿUyaynah, said: “When Dharr, the son of ʿUmar, died, ʿUmar sat on the lip of the grave and said, ‘My son, my grief for what awaits you has distracted me from grieving over losing you. Would that I knew—what did you say, and what was said to you?
O Allah, You commanded him to obey You and to show kindness to me. I have waived for him whatever duty toward me he neglected; so waive for him whatever duty toward You he neglected.’
It is also reported that he said, ‘We have departed and left you behind; had we stayed, we could not have helped you. We therefore commit you to the care of the Most Merciful of the merciful.’ ”

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd reported from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Asadī: “ʿUmar ibn Dharr died in the year 153 AH. He inclined toward the doctrine of irjāʾ. When he died, Sufyān al-Thawrī and al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ did not attend his funeral. He was reliable—God willing—and transmitted many hadiths. In the same year Muṭayyin also dated his death.
Ahmad ibn Ṣāliḥ, citing Abū Nuʿaym, said that he died in 152 AH.
As for Isḥāq ibn Yasār al-Naṣībī, he narrated from Abū Nuʿaym and died in 155 AH.
Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal and a group likewise narrated from Abū Nuʿaym, and he died in 156 AH; this is the soundest view. The same was stated by al-Fallās, ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah, and al-Tirmidhī.
Abū ʿUbayd said he died in 157 AH, and other dates have also been mentioned.
Al-Bukhārī used him as evidence, whereas Muslim did not.

Isḥāq ibn Ṭāriq informed us; Ibn Khalīl informed us; al-Labbān informed us; al-Ḥaddād informed us; Abū Nuʿaym informed us; Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allah informed us; Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, saying: I heard Abū Yaḥyā Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm say, “I heard ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī say, ‘I heard Sufyān…’ ”
