Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, on the authority of al-Bahī, related: “On the Day of Badr the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had only two horsemen with him: al-Zubayr on the right flank and al-Miqdād on the left.”

ʿUrwah said: “Al-Zubayr wore a yellow turban on the Day of Badr, and Gabriel descended in the same appearance as al-Zubayr.”

Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ʿĀṣim, from Zur, from ʿAbd Allāh, narrated: “On the Day of Badr we were three men sharing one camel; ʿAlī and Abū Lubābah took turns with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Whenever the Prophet’s turn to ride came, they would say to him, ‘Ride and we will walk.’ He would reply, ‘I am no less in need of the reward than you, and you are no better able to walk than I.’”

The view commonly held by the scholars of the military expeditions is that it was Marthad ibn Abī Marthad al-Ghanawī, not Abū Lubābah, for the Prophet ﷺ had sent Abū Lubābah back and placed him in charge of Madinah.

Maʿmar said: I heard al-Zuhrī say, “No one took part in Badr except a Qurayshī, an Anṣārī, or one of their allies.”

Al-Ḥasan stated: “Among them were twelve freedmen.”

ʿAmr al-ʿAnqazī reported: Isrāʾīl told us, from Abū Isḥāq, from Ḥārithah ibn Muḍrib, from ʿAlī, who said: “On the Day of Badr we captured two men—one an Arab and the other a client (mawlā). The Arab escaped, but we held on to the client, who belonged to ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿayṭ. We asked him, ‘How many are they?’ He replied, ‘They are many and formidable.’ We began striking him until we brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, yet he would not inform him. The Messenger of Allah then asked, ‘How many camels do they slaughter each day?’ He answered, ‘Ten a day.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘The force numbers one thousand men—one hundred to each camel.’”

Yūnus, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, reported: ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Bakr narrated that
