as well as Abū Munīb al-Jurashī, Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, Abū Naḍrah, Makḥūl, and a number of others. He also saw Anas ibn Mālik.

Those who transmitted from him include Sufyān, Shuʿbah, Ḥammād ibn Salamah, Hushaym, Ibn ʿUlayyah, Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Bishr ibn al-Mufaḍḍal, Yazīd ibn Hārūn, Ḥammād ibn Zayd, and many more. Yazīd recorded 99 hadiths on his authority.

Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir al-Ḍuḍaʿī related that Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind said: “I once travelled to Syria, where I was met by Ghaylān. He said, ‘I wish to ask you about two matters.’ I replied, ‘Ask me about fifty matters, and let me ask you about two.’ He said, ‘Ask, O Dāwūd.’ I said, ‘Inform me: what is the finest thing granted to the children of Adam?’ He answered, ‘Reason.’ I then asked, ‘Tell me about reason—what exactly is it? Is it something open to everyone so that whoever wishes may take it and whoever wishes may leave it, or is it allotted in set portions?’ At that he walked away without giving me an answer.”

Al-Nasāʾī, Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, and others declared him reliable. Ḥammād ibn Zayd said, “I have never seen anyone more learned in fiqh than Dāwūd.” Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah remarked, “How astonishing that the people of Basra consult ʿUthmān al-Battī while they have among them Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind!” Wuhayb said, “The affairs of Basra revolved around four men: Ayyūb, Yūnus, Ibn ʿAwn, and Sulaymān al-Taymī.” Someone then asked, “What about Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind?”

Ibn Jurayj said, “I have never seen the like of Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind; he would pound at knowledge endlessly.” ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad reported that he asked his father about Dāwūd, and Aḥmad replied, “Is a man like Dāwūd to be enquired about? Dāwūd is trustworthy—utterly trustworthy.” Al-ʿIjlī said, “He was righteous, reliable, and worked as a tailor.” Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ stated, “Dāwūd was the mufti of the people of Basra.”

Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdī said: “Dāwūd came up to us and said, ‘Young men, I will tell you—perhaps…’”
