Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

I read aloud before Abū al-Faḍl Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allah, in the year 93, with a transmission going back through ʿAbd al-Muʿizz ibn Muḥammad al-Bazzār and Zaynab bint ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Shaʿriyyah—another independent chain (ḥāʾ).

I also read before Isḥāq ibn Ṭāriq. Yūsuf ibn Khalīl informed us; Thābit ibn Muḥammad, Muḥammad ibn Maʿmar, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Iṣbahbad (1), and a group of others likewise transmitted. They said:

Zāhir ibn Ṭāhir reported to us; Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṣābūnī reported to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Rāzī reported to us; Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb al-Rāzī reported to us; Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us. He said:

“I asked Ibn ʿAwn, and he related the following to me. He said: ‘I went to Abū Wāʾil after he had lost his sight. I said to a maidservant of his, “Tell Abū Wāʾil: relate to us what you heard from ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd.”

She went in and said, “Abū Wāʾil, narrate to them what you heard from ʿAbd Allah.”

He said, “I heard ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd say:

‘O people! You will all be gathered on a single plain where the caller will make you all hear and the sight will encompass you. Know that the truly wretched is the one who was decreed wretched while still in his mother’s womb, and the truly fortunate is the one who takes admonition from the fate of others.’”’”

Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ said: “Al-Walīd ibn Hishām al-Qaḥdhamī narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn ʿAwn, from his father, from his grandfather Arṭabān, who said:

‘I used to be a church deacon in Maysān, then I was taken as part of the spoils allotted to ʿAbd Allah ibn Durrah al-Muzanī.’”

Aḥmad al-ʿIjlī said: “The people of Basrah take pride in four men: Ayyūb, Yūnus, Sulaymān al-Taymī, and Ibn ʿAwn.”

Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh said: “I heard Ibn ʿAwn say:

‘No one kept closer company with al-Ḥasan than we did. By Allah, I once came to his house on a scorching day, and he was not at home, so I lay down on—’”

(1) Al-Iṣbahbad: this is how the name appears in the manuscripts.

(=) Some transmit the word with both the initial hamza and the ra vocalised with a fathah, meaning “need”; others transmit it with the hamza under a kasrah and the ra quiescent, with the same meaning. Alternative forms are al-arb, al-irb, al-irbah and al-maʼrabah. (1) A Persian loanword meaning “prince” or “commander”; see al-Muarrab, al-Jawaliqi, p. 266.
