al-Wārith ibn Saʿīd, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān, Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ, Rawḥ ibn ʿUbādah, and others.

He was deemed reliable by Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, al-Nasāʾī, and the scholars at large.

Al-ʿUqaylī nevertheless listed him in his book al-Ḍuʿafāʾ without citing any chain of transmission and said, “His ḥadith are inconsistent.”

Abū Bakr ibn Khallād said, “I heard Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān—when Ḥusayn al-Muʿallim was mentioned—say, ‘There is inconsistency in him.’ ”

I (the author) say: The man is trustworthy, and both compilers of the two Ṣaḥīḥs accepted his reports as evidence.

He died sometime around the year 150 AH.

Al-ʿUqaylī cited a single ḥadith for him in which he alone preserved the continuous chain, whereas other leading preservers transmitted it in the mursal form. So what of it? Reliability does not require that a narrator never err. Even Shuʿbah and Mālik made mistakes—and what paragons of integrity and distinction they are! Ḥusayn al-Muʿallim is among those whom Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn and the previously-mentioned authorities declared sound. He is counted among the senior imams of ḥadith—and Allah knows best.

148 – ʿAmr ibn Maymūn ibn Mihrān al-Jazarī (ʿA)
The Imām, ḥāfiẓ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Jazarī, the jurist.

He narrated from his father, Sulaymān ibn Yasār, ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and Makḥūl.

Those who transmitted from him include al-Thawrī, ʿAbbād ibn al-ʿAwwām, Ibn al-Mubārak, Abū Muʿāwiyah, Bishr ibn al-Mufaḍḍal, Yazīd ibn Hārūn, Muḥammad ibn Bishr, and others.

He used to say, “If I knew that a single letter of the Sunnah remained for me to learn in Yemen, I would travel there for it.”

I (the author) say: Such a statement attests to the vastness of his knowledge.
