Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

author of numerous works, and the very first scholar to commit knowledge to writing in Mecca. He was the freedman of Umayyah ibn Khālid. Others say that his grandfather Jurayj was a slave (1) owned by Umm Ḥabīb bint Jubayr—the wife of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Khālid ibn Asīd the Umayyad—so his walāʾ (client affiliation) was traced back to her household; he was a Roman slave. Ibn Jurayj had a brother named Muḥammad, who is scarcely known, and a son likewise named Muḥammad.

He transmitted hadith from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ—frequently and with great precision—and from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, Nāfiʿ the freedman of Ibn ʿUmar, and from Ṭāwūs a single report consisting of his own statement (2).

It is also related that he collected the narrations of Ṣafiyyah bint Shaybah and wished to visit her in person, but it did not work out.

He further received knowledge from Mujāhid—two readings of the Qur’an—from Maymūn ibn Mihrān, Yūsuf ibn Māhak, ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, ʿIkrimah al-ʿAbbāsī in mursal form, ʿIkrimah ibn Khālid al-Makhzūmī, Ibn al-Munkadir, ʿUbayd Allah ibn Abī Yazīd, al-Qāsim ibn Abī Bazza, ʿAbd Allah ibn Kathīr al-Dārī, Ayyūb ibn Hāniʾ, Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, Zayd ibn Aslam, al-Zuhrī, Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, ʿAbd Allah ibn Ṭāwūs, ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr, ʿAbd Allah ibn Kathīr ibn al-Muṭṭalib, ʿAbd Allah ibn Kaysān, ʿAbdah ibn Abī Lubābah, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād ibn Jaʿfar, and a great many others.

He even narrated from his peers—indeed, from some of his own pupils—so he related traditions from Ziyād ibn Saʿd, his associate; Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq; Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah; Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAṭāʾ, better known as Ibn Abī Yahyā; Saʿīd ibn Abī Ayyūb al-Miṣrī; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah; Maʿmar ibn Rāshid; and Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb al-Miṣrī—one of the oceans of knowledge.

Those who transmitted from him include Thawr ibn Yazīd, al-Awzāʿī, al-Layth, the two Sufyāns, and the two Ḥammāds.
