Anas ibn Mālik—and it is possible that he heard it from him directly.
They further state that Ibn ʿAjlān died in the year 148 AH.
Al-Bukhārī, in his book al-Ḍuʿafāʾ, records—under Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān—the statement of Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān concerning Muḥammad: that he had not mastered the ḥadiths of al-Maqburī from his father, nor those of al-Maqburī from Abū Hurayrah; in other words, he would at times confuse the two sets of reports.
I have mentioned Ibn ʿAjlān in al-Mīzān: if his narrations do not attain the rank of ṣaḥīḥ, they certainly do not drop below the rank of ḥasan—and Allah knows best.
Aḥmad ibn Faraḥ the ḥāfiẓ—and a group of others—reported to us, saying:
Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Dāʾim informed us; ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn Kulayb informed us; and Aḥmad ibn Salāmah together with al-Khaḍir ibn Ḥammūyah likewise related to me—from Ibn Kulayb; Ibn Kulayb told us: ʿAlī ibn Bayān told us; Muḥammad ibn Makhlad told us; Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār told us; Ibn ʿArafah narrated to us; Bishr ibn al-Mufaḍḍal narrated to us; from Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān; from al-Maqburī; from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “When a fly falls into the vessel of any one of you, one of its wings carries disease while the other carries the cure. It protects itself with the wing that has the disease, so let him immerse the fly entirely and then remove it.” (1)
This ḥadith possesses a good, elevated chain of transmission.
It was also recorded by Abū Dāwūd, from Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, from Bishr, where it likewise appears with an elevated isnād.
