ibn Kaʿb al-Qurazī, al-Nuʿmān ibn Abī ʿAyyāsh al-Zuraqī, Abū al-Ḥubbāb Saʿīd ibn Yasār, Ṣayfī—the freedman of Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī—ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Miqsam, ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah, Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥunayn, al-Qaʿqāʿ ibn Ḥakīm, Muḥammad ibn Qays ibn Makhramah, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār, ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah, Zayd ibn Aslam, Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, and many others.
It is also said that he narrated from Anas ibn Mālik, which would be possible if the report is sound.
Those who transmitted from him include: Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAblah; Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir—who was older than he; Shuʿbah; Sufyān; Zayd ibn Abī Unaysah—who had died long before him—as had likewise ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Bukht; Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān; al-Layth ibn Saʿd; Mālik ibn Anas; Ibn al-Mubārak; Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar; Bakr ibn Muḍar; Khālid ibn al-Ḥārith; Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ al-Makkī; Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān; Ṣafwān ibn ʿĪsā; Abū ʿĀṣim; Aṣbāṭ ibn Muḥammad; Ibn Idrīs; and a great many others.
He was a jurist, a mufti, devout in worship, utterly reliable, and of lofty standing. He conducted a large study-circle in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
He joined the uprising against the caliph al-Manṣūr alongside Ibn Ḥasan. When Ibn Ḥasan was killed, the governor of Medina, Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān, resolved to have him flogged. People said to the governor, “May Allah set you right! If you had seen al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī do such a thing, would you have struck him?” He replied, “No.” They said, “Ibn ʿAjlān among the people of Medina is like al-Ḥasan among the people of Basra.”
It was even said that the governor intended to cut off his hand, but once they spoke to him and the crowds thronged his door, he relented and pardoned him.
ʿAbbās ibn Naṣr al-Baghdādī narrated, from Ṣafwān ibn ʿĪsā: “Ibn ʿAjlān remained in his mother’s womb for three years; her abdomen was opened, he was brought out, and his teeth had already grown.”
This report was also transmitted by ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Aḥmad al-Ghāfiqī from ʿAbbās.
Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah said, “Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā al-Farrāʾ narrated to us; he said: al-Walīd ibn….”
