and a wind that will sweep them away, casting them into the sea, and the rising of the sun from the West).
This is a singular (gharīb) report.
The substance of the ḥadīth is found in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (1) through the transmission of Abū al-Ṭufayl from Abū Sarīḥah.
Abū Ḥafṣ al-Abbār narrated—from Ibn Abī Laylā, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Jābir—who said:
“Whenever revelation descended upon the Prophet ﷺ, you would say, ‘He is a warner to a people who are about to be destroyed, or the punishment will strike them at dawn.’ But when it lifted, he became the person with the most pleasant disposition, the brightest face, and the greatest propensity to laugh—or, he said, to smile.”
This ḥadīth is munkar.
Ibn Ḥibbān (2) said: Ibn Abī Laylā also transmitted—from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd al-Māzinī—who said:
“The adhan of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was recited twice for each phrase, and his iqāmah likewise twice for each phrase.”
It was reported by Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ruʾāsī from him.
Ibn Ḥibbān then remarked: “This is a mursal report; there is no sound basis for attributing it to the Prophet.”
Aḥmad ibn Abī Ẓabyah said: My father narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, in a marfūʿ report: “If a man laughs during his prayer, he must repeat his ablution and his prayer; but if he merely smiles, nothing is required of him.” (3)
Al-Bukhārī and others said: Ibn Abī Laylā died in the year 148 AH.
I say: He passed away in the month of Ramaḍān.
ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim informed us; Abū al-Qāsim al-Ḥarastānī informed us in person; Ibn — informed us—
