So someone who is unaware may imagine that the person meant is the Basran Imām whose biography we are discussing.
Hamīd ibn Hilāl narrated—from Yūnus, from al-Barāʾ—a report that appears at the very beginning of Abū ʿUbayd’s Gharīb. When this is pointed out, it is said to him, “The subject of this entry never met al-Barāʾ.” He replies, “What would prevent him from transmitting it from al-Barāʾ in mursal form?” They answer, “The man in our entry is a client of ʿAbd al-Qays, whereas the narrator of the ‘banner’ report is a client of Thaqīf.”
Abū ʿArūbah al-Ḥarrānī compiled the ḥadīths of Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd the Imām. I read the first and second fascicles of that compilation to Abū al-Faḍl Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh ibn Tāj al-Umānāʾ in the year ninety-four, through the chain: from ʿAbd al-Muʿizz ibn Muḥammad al-Harawī; he informed us Zāhir ibn Ṭāhir; he informed us Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Adīb; he informed us Abū Aḥmad Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad the ḥāfiẓ; who said: Abū ʿArūbah narrated to us in Ḥarrān; he said: Isḥāq ibn Shāhīn narrated to us; he said: Khālid narrated to us, from Yūnus, from al-Ḥakam ibn al-Aʿraj, from al-Ashʿath ibn Thurmulah, from Abū Bakrah:
“I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, ‘Whoever kills a treaty-subject (muʿāhid) without right, Allah has made Paradise unlawful for him, such that he will not even smell its fragrance.’ (1)
This ḥadīth has a sound chain of transmission. Al-Nasāʾī also recorded it through the route of Ibn ʿUlayyah, from Yūnus.
125 – Zayd ibn Wāqid al-Qurashī, their client * (Kh, D, S, Q)
Abū ʿUmar—and some say Abū ʿAmr—al-Qurashī, their client; the Damascene jurist.
