Salam ibn Abi Mutiʿ related from Yunus, who said:
"May Allah have mercy on al-Hasan (1); I believe al-Hasan spoke purely seeking Allah’s reward. May Allah have mercy on Muhammad; I believe he kept silent purely seeking Allah’s reward."
Saʿid ibn ʿAmir reported: Harb ibn Maymun, the truthful and upright Muslim, narrated to us, from Khuwayl—meaning the son-in-law of Shuʿbah—who said:
“I was with Yunus when a man came in and said, ‘Abu ʿAbd Allah! You forbid us to sit with ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd, yet your own son has visited him!’
Yunus asked, ‘My son?!’
The man replied, ‘Yes.’
The shaykh became angry, and I remained until his son arrived. Yunus said, ‘My son, you know my opinion of ʿAmr, yet you go in to him?’
The boy answered, ‘So-and-so was with me…,’ and he began to offer excuses.
Yunus replied, ‘I forbid you from fornication, theft, and drinking wine, and I would rather you meet Allah burdened with those sins than meet Him holding the views of ʿAmr and the followers of ʿAmr.’”
Saʿid ibn ʿAmir also said that Yunus declared, “I count it among Allah’s favors to me that I was not raised in Kufa.”
It is related that Yunus met Ayyub, and when they parted Ayyub exclaimed, “May Allah make life wretched after you!”
Fudayl ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab said: Khalid ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us: “Yunus ibn ʿUbayd once tried to bridle a donkey but could not manage it, so he turned to a companion and said, ‘Do you think Allah has prescribed jihad for a man who cannot even bridle a donkey?’”
Ahmad ibn Salamah informed me, from Abu al-Makārim al-Labbān; Abu ʿAli al-Haddad informed us; Abu Nuʿaym reported to us; Sulayman ibn Ahmad narrated to us; Ahmad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Tustari the cloth-merchant narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Sudran narrated to us; ʿAmir ibn Abi ʿAmir al-Kharrāz narrated: I heard Yunus ibn ʿUbayd reciting these elegiac verses:
“Neither the steadfast man is rescued from death by his patience,
nor the fretful one who loathes death spared by his panic.”
