Ibn Saʿd said, “He died in 148 AH, at the age of seventy.”
Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ʿIsa al-Baghdadi, in his History, wrote, “He passed away while still a young man, in Muharram of 149 AH.”
To claim that he was “young” is a mistake; in fact he had grown old and grey, and the reports transmitted from him number roughly two hundred and upward.
Muhammad ibn Ḥamzah informed us—by ijāzah, if not by direct audition—and I read it aloud before Sulayman the jurist; they both said:
“Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Muḥammad ibn Makkī the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr ibn Abī ʿĪsā the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Muḥammad ibn Ṭāhir the ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Bazzār of Rayy narrated to us; Abu Ṭāhir Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Ḥamdān informed us.
Al-Khaḍir ibn ʿAbdān also informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Qazwīnī informed us in 622 AH; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Arghandī informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl al-Ṣāʿidī informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Khabbāzī and Abū Sahl Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad—both of them—said:
‘Muḥammad ibn Makkī al-Kushmīhanī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf ibn Maṭar informed us; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Juʿfī the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Muḥammad ibn Khālid informed us; Muḥammad ibn Wahb narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ḥarb narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd al-Zubaydī narrated to us; al-Zuhri—Muḥammad ibn Muslim—reported from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, from Zaynab bint Abī Salamah, from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her):
The Prophet ﷺ saw in her house a young girl whose face bore a darkish streak, and he said, “Treat her with ruqyah, for she is suffering from the evil eye.” (1)
