122 – al-Zubaydi, Muhammad ibn al-Walid ibn ʿAmir (cited in al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Nasaʾi, and Ibn Majah)
A leading authority, meticulous memoriser of hadith, and judge—Abu Hudhayl al-Zubaydi of Hims, who served as its qadi.
He was born during the caliphate of ʿAbd al-Malik.
He related traditions from: Nafiʿ, the freedman of Ibn ʿUmar; Makḥul; ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb; al-Zuhri; Saʿid al-Maqburi; ʿAmir ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr; ʿAmir ibn Jashib; Luqman ibn ʿAmir; Yahya ibn Jabir al-Taʾi; Rashid ibn Saʿd; ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr; Sulaym ibn ʿAmir; ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim; al-Faḍl ibn Faḍalah; ʿAbd al-Waḥid ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Basri; Saʿd ibn Ibrahim, and many others.
Those who transmitted from him include: al-Awzaʿi; Shuʿayb ibn Abi Ḥamzah; Faraj ibn Faḍalah; Yaman ibn ʿAdi; Baqiyyah; Muhammad ibn Ḥarb; Yahya ibn Ḥamzah the judge; ʿAbd Allah ibn Salim; ʿUtbah ibn Ḥammad; Munabbih ibn ʿUthman; his brother Abu Bakr ibn al-Walid; Muhammad ibn ʿIsa ibn Sumayʿ; Maslamah ibn ʿAli, and others.
He was counted among the most astute scholars.
Yahya ibn Maʿin deemed him reliable, remarking, “He is more accurate—in his transmission from al-Zuhri—than Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah.” He added, “The most dependable of al-Zuhri’s students are: Malik, then Maʿmar, then ʿAqil, then Yunus, then Shuʿayb, al-Awzaʿi, and al-Zubaydi.”
Al-Walid ibn Muslim reported: “I heard al-Awzaʿi prefer Muhammad ibn al-Walid al-Zubaydi over everyone else who heard from al-Zuhri.”
