and al-Ashʿath as well, yet they record Ibn ʿAwn’s hadith?!
Aḥmad ibn Abī Maryam reported that Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said:
“When Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth travelled to ʿAbbādān, the scholars of Basra gathered around him and said, ‘Narrate to us, but do not relate anything from three men: al-Ashʿath ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd, and Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad.’
He replied, ‘As for al-Ashʿath—he is yours …,’ and he went on to recount the story (1).
Al-Naḍr ibn Shumayl said: Al-Ashʿath ibn ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to us, from Muḥammad, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘The ants declare Allah’s praise’ (2).
Ibn ʿAdī said: ‘Most of his reports are sound; he is among those whose narrations are relied upon, and he is far superior to al-Ashʿath ibn Sawwār.’
Al-Fallās said: ‘He died in the year 142 AH.’
Al-Dāraquṭnī stated: ‘There are three transmitters named al-Ashʿath who report from al-Ḥasan: al-Ḥumrānī—trustworthy; al-Ashʿath al-Ḥuddānī—acceptable; and al-Ashʿath ibn Sawwār—the weakest of the three.’
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said: ‘Al-Ashʿath al-Ḥumrānī was a man of Sunnah, well-versed in the detailed legal issues transmitted from al-Ḥasan al-Daqqāq, and he served as the main conduit for Hishām ibn Ḥassān.’
