The public preacher.
He narrated from al-Shaʿbī and al-Nakhaʿī, and he preached in Kūfah for many years. People praise his chastity and his grasp of jurisprudence. Their Ashʿath would draw analogy on the basis of al-Ḥasan’s opinion and then transmit it.
Al-Anṣārī said: Ashʿath al-Ḥumrānī told me, “Do not go to ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd, for people warn against him.”
It is reported from Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd that he came to Ashʿath to review matters with him.
Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, narrating from Abū Ḥurra, said:
“Whenever Ashʿath al-Ḥumrānī visited al-Ḥasan he would say to him, ‘O Abū Hāniʾ, lay out your stock—spread out your questions.’”
Al-Qaṭṭān added: “Among al-Ḥasan’s companions I never saw anyone more firmly grounded than Ashʿath. I did not transmit much from him, but he was reliable.”
Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh said: I heard Ashʿath say:
“Everything I have related to you from al-Ḥasan I actually heard from him, except for the report about the man who bowed before joining the row (1), the report from ʿAlī concerning deliverance, and another mursal report:
that a man said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, when will carrion become unlawful for us?’
He answered, ‘When you have drunk your fill of milk and it is time to provision your family (2).’”
Al-Fallās said: Yaḥyā asked me, “Where have you come from?”
I replied, “From Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh.”
He said, “Regarding whose ḥadith?”
I answered, “The ḥadith of Ibn ʿAwn.”
He said, “And they leave Shuʿbah…"
