Abū Hammām al-Dallāl said: When Ashʿath ibn Sawār was serving as the judge of Ahwāz he led the people in prayer and recited Sūrat al-Najm. Those praying behind him performed the prostration of recitation, yet he himself did not. On another occasion he led them, recited: “When the heaven is split asunder” (Sūrat al-Inshiqāq), whereupon he prostrated but the congregation did not.
Shuʿbah narrated—from Ashʿath ibn Sawār, from al-Shaʿbī, from Masrūq, from Ibn Masʿūd—that he said:
“The prescribed sunnah regarding women is: divorce and the waiting period.” (1)
He died in the year 136 AH, as dated by al-Fallas.
Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh told us, through ʿAbd al-Muʿizz ibn Muḥammad, who reported from Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl, who in turn related from Muhallam ibn Ismāʿīl, from al-Khalīl ibn Aḥmad, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Qutaybah, from ʿAbthar ibn al-Qāsim, from Ashʿath, from Muḥammad, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever dies owing a fast of one month, let a poor person be fed on his behalf for every day.” (2)
Al-Nasāʾī also recorded it through Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā from Qutaybah.
It has likewise been transmitted as a mawqūf report, and that version is more authentic.
