The Fifth Stratum of the Followers ( Ṭābiʿīn )
- Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Qurashī al-Hāshimī * (ʿ)
The son of the martyr Abū ʿAbd Allāh—the Prophet’s “sweet basil,” his grandson and beloved—al-Ḥusayn ibn the Commander of the Believers Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ibn ʿAbd Manāf ibn Shaybah, known as ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim, whose given name was ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Manāf ibn Quṣayy.
He was the Imām, “al-Ṣādiq” (the Truthful), the senior of Banū Hāshim: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashī, al-Hāshimī, al-ʿAlawī, al-Nabawī, al-Madanī—one of the luminaries of his age.
His mother was Umm Farwah, daughter of al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Taymī.
Her mother was Asmāʾ, daughter of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr, and for that reason he would say, “Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq is my forefather twice over.”
He used to become angry with the Rāfiḍah and detest them whenever he learned that they maligned his grandfather Abū Bakr, openly or secretly—of this there is no doubt. Yet the Rāfiḍah are an ignorant people; their whims have flung them into the abyss. So away with them!
He was born in the year 80 AH.
He met a number of the Companions; I think he saw Anas ibn Mālik and Sahl ibn Saʿd.
He related ḥadith from his father, Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Rāfiʿ; ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr; ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ—his report from him appears in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim—his grandfather al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad; Nāfiʿ al-ʿUmarī; Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir; al-Zuhrī; Muslim ibn Abī Maryam; and others. He was not prolific except in narrating from his father, and the two of them were counted among the leading scholars of Medina.
