and among those who narrated from him were Ibn al-Mubarak, Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Khālid ibn al-Ḥārith, Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah, and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī. He lived on until shortly before the year 150 AH.
- Ḥabīb al-Muʿallim ibn Abī Qarībah Dīnār al-Baṣrī * (ʿ)
He belonged to the emancipated clients of Maʿqil ibn Yasār and was the son of Abū Qarībah Dīnār. His kunya was Abū Muḥammad, and he is counted among Basra’s reliable narrators.
He reported ḥadith from al-Ḥasan, ʿAṭāʾ, and ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb.
Those who transmitted from him include Ḥammād ibn Salamah, Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ, ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Thaqafī, ʿAbd al-Wārith, and others.
It was said that Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān would not transmit from him. Al-Nasāʾī commented, “He is not strong.” By contrast, Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “How sound are his narrations!” Ibn Maʿīn and Abū Zurʿah both declared him “trustworthy.”
Some maintained that his name was Ḥabīb ibn Zayd; others said Ḥabīb ibn Zāʾidah; still others, Ḥabīb ibn Abī Baqiyyah—Allah knows best.
