Madinah. Usamah said, “The news reached us just as we had finished leveling the grave of Ruqayyah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; the Prophet ﷺ had left me to stay with her together with ‘Uthman.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then set off on the return journey with the captives, among whom were ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt and al-Nadr ibn al-Harith. When he emerged from the mountain pass of al-Safra’, he distributed the discretionary spoils, and upon reaching al-Rawha’ he was met by Muslims who came to congratulate him on the victory. Salamah ibn Salamah said to them, “What are you congratulating us for? By Allah, we faced nothing but bent old women, as thin as hobbled camels, and we slaughtered them!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, “My dear nephew, those were the leaders,” meaning the eminent chiefs.
Al-Nadr ibn al-Harith al-‘Abdari was subsequently executed at al-Safra’, and at ‘Uraq al-Dhabyah ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt was put to death. When the Prophet ﷺ ordered his execution, ‘Uqbah asked, “Who will care for my children, O Muhammad?” He replied, “The Fire.” ‘Uqbah was then killed by ‘Asim ibn Thabit ibn Abi al-Aqlah, though some say it was ‘Ali.
Hammad ibn Salamah relates—from ‘Ata’ ibn as-Sa’ib, from al-Sha‘bi—that when the Prophet ﷺ gave orders for ‘Uqbah’s execution, the man protested, “Will you kill me, O Muhammad, above all the people of Quraysh?” He ﷺ answered, “Yes. Do you know what this man did to me? He came while I was in prostration behind the Maqam, placed his foot on my neck, and pressed until I thought my eyes would pop out. On another occasion he brought the entrails of a sheep and threw them on my head while I was prostrating, and Fatimah came and washed them off.”
Those who were martyred on the Day of Badr were: Mihja‘; Dhu al-Shimalayn ‘Umayr ibn ‘Abd ‘Amr al-Khuzai; ‘Aqil ibn al-Bukayr; Safwan ibn Bayda’; ‘Umayr ibn Abi Waqqas, the brother of Sa‘d; and ‘Ubaydah ibn
