Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

So I said to him, “I have a request to make of you.”
He asked, “What is it?”
I replied, “If you are unable to grant it, please do not be angry with me.”
He said, “My heart is not in my own hand.”
I said, “Then dictate to me.”
He responded, “I will not do so.”

ʿAlī ibn Saʿīd al-Nasawī said, “I heard Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal state, ‘Manṣūr is the most reliable transmitter in Kūfah, whereas al-Aʿmash’s narrations are subject to much variation.’”

Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh said: Wakīʿ narrated to us, “I heard al-Aʿmash say, ‘Were it not for people’s notice, I would perform the dawn prayer and then partake of the pre-dawn meal (1).’”

ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus related: “The governor ʿĪsā ibn Mūsā once sent al-Aʿmash one thousand dirhams.”

(1) His evidence is the report related by al-Nasaʾi, 4/142; Ahmad, 5/400; and Ibn Majah, no. 1695, transmitted through Asim, from Zur, who said: “I asked Hudhayfa, ‘At what hour did you take sahur with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ He replied, ‘It was already daytime, except that the sun had not yet risen.’” All the transmitters are reliable, but Asim ibn Abi al-Nujud is the sole narrator of the report. Abu Bakr al-Jassas comments on it in Ahkam al-Quran, 1/219-220: “Some maintain that this narration is not firmly established from Hudhayfa, and in any case it is a solitary report (khabar al-ahad); it therefore cannot override the Qurʾan. Allah says: ‘…until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread of dawn’ (Q 2:187), making fasting and abstention from food and drink obligatory once the white thread—that is, the whiteness of dawn—appears. If Hudhayfa’s hadith were taken literally it would permit what the verse forbids. The Prophet ﷺ said in the hadith of ʿAdi ibn Hatim: ‘It is the whiteness of the day and the darkness of the night.’ How, then, could eating during the day while fasting be lawful when Allah has prohibited it in the Qurʾan and the Sunnah? “Even if Hudhayfa’s report were soundly transmitted, it could not be taken as allowing eating at that time, because the act of eating is not attributed to the Prophet ﷺ; Hudhayfa only states that he himself ate then. His being with the Prophet does not prove that the Prophet knew of it or approved it. Even if he did know and approve, the incident could have occurred at the very end of the night, near daybreak, and Hudhayfa may have called it ‘daytime’ merely because of its nearness to the day. “ʿIrbad ibn Sariyah said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me, saying, “Come to the blessed breakfast (ghada).”’ He thus called the sahur ‘breakfast’ because it is close to it, and similarly Hudhayfa may have called the time of his sahur ‘daytime’ because it was close to the day.” Abu Jaʿfar al-Tahawi, after citing Hudhayfa’s report in Maʿani al-Athar, remarks: “This hadith indicates that he ate after dawn had broken while intending to fast, and he relates the same of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; yet other reports from the Prophet ﷺ contradict it.”
