ibn Abī Ṭālib, al-Hāshimī, of the Ṭālibī branch, and a Medinan by residence.
His mother was Zaynab, the daughter of Imām ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib.
He narrated from: Ibn ʿUmar, Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Anas ibn Mālik, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, his maternal uncle Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyya, ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, al-Rubayyiʿ bint Muʿawwiḍ (a female Companion), Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, and many others.
Those who transmitted from him include: al-Thawrī, Zāʾida, Fulayḥ, Ḥammād ibn Salama, Bishr ibn al-Mufaḍḍal, Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna, Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiya, Zuhayr ibn Muḥammad, and a number of others.
Imām Aḥmad and others adduced his narrations as proof.
Abū Ḥātim said: “His ḥadith is soft.”
Ibn Khuzayma remarked: “I do not rely on him because of his poor memory.”
Al-Tirmidhī reported: “I heard Muḥammad (i.e., al-Bukhārī) say that Aḥmad, Isḥāq, and al-Ḥumaydī used to accept his ḥadith as evidence.”
Al-Bukhārī judged him: “His narrations are nearly acceptable.”
Ibn Maʿīn deemed him weak.
Ibn al-Madīnī said: “Mālik did not include him in his works, and Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān would not narrate from him.”
Another scholar said: “He was among the learned worshippers.”
Al-Fasawī commented: “Truthful, though his ḥadith contains weakness.”
I (the author) say: His reports do not reach the level of soundness required for legal proof.
Khalīfa and Ibn Saʿd recorded that Ibn ʿAqīl died after 140 AH.
