He replied, “No. Leave them; let them compete in righteous deeds, for I fear they would rely on this (1).”
Qatadah likewise narrated it from Anas with similar wording.
Muhammad ibn Saʿd said: Sulayman al-Taymi died in Basra, in Dhu al-Qaʿdah of the year 143 AH.
Abu Dawud reported—on the authority of Muʿtamir ibn Sulayman—that he passed away at the age of ninety-seven.
93 – Zakariyya ibn Abi Zaʾidah, Abu Yahya al-Hamdani * (ʿ)
He was the judge of Kufa, Abu Yahya al-Hamdani, a Kufan by origin.
He transmitted hadith from al-Shaʿbi, Musʿab ibn Shaybah, Khalid ibn Salamah, Saʿid ibn Abi Burdah, and others.
By virtue of contemporaneity he is counted among the youngest of the Followers; otherwise I know of no direct narration of his from any Companion.
Among those who transmitted from him were his son—the ḥāfiẓ Yahya—together with Shuʿbah, al-Thawri, Ibn al-Mubarak, al-Qaṭṭān, Wakīʿ, Abu Nuʿaym, and ʿUbayd Allah.

The same report is found in Ahmad, Musnad, vol. 3, p. 157, through the isnad of ʿArim; and in al-Bukhari, vol. 1, p. 201, through Musaddad—both chains ending with Muʿtamar b. Sulayman, from his father, from Anas. A variant transmitted by Qatadah from Anas is cited by al-Bukhari, vol. 1, pp. 199–200, Book of Knowledge, chapter “One who imparts knowledge to some people to the exclusion of others,” and by Muslim, no. 32, Book of Faith, chapter “Proof that whoever dies upon tawhid enters Paradise.”
