ʿUmayr ibn al-Ḥammām fought on until he was killed, and ʿAwf ibn ʿAfrāʾ—his mother was ʿAfrāʾ—kept fighting until he too was slain.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then threw a handful of gravel at the idolaters, declaring, “May your faces be disfigured!” He next said to his Companions, “Charge them!” The enemy lines broke, Allah routed the chiefs of disbelief, seventy were killed and another seventy taken prisoner.
The Prophet ﷺ returned to the shelter while Saʿd ibn Muʿādh stood at the entrance with his sword, together with a group of the Helpers, fearing the enemy might return against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
He then said to his Companions, “I know that some men from the Banu Hāshim and others were forced out against their will; they have no desire to fight us. By Allah, if I meet him I will strike him with the sword!” When this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said to ʿUmar, “Abu Ḥafṣ, will the face of the Messenger of Allah’s uncle be struck with the sword?” ʿUmar replied, “Let me sever the neck of this hypocrite.”
Abū Hudhayfah would later say, “I have never felt safe from the word I spoke that day; I remain fearful of it unless martyrdom expiates it for me.” He was martyred at the Battle of al-Yamāmah.
As for Abū al-Bukhtarī, he had been among the people who restrained others from harming the Messenger of Allah and who helped annul the boycott document. He was encountered by al-Mujadhdhir ibn Diyād al-Balawī, an ally of the Helpers, who said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden us to kill you.”
Abū al-Bukhtarī asked, “And my companion Junādah al-Laythī?” Al-Mujadhdhir replied, “No, by Allah, the command concerns only you.” Abū al-Bukhtarī said, “Then I shall die along with him, so that the women of Mecca will not say I abandoned my comrade for the sake of life.” The two then fought,
