people whom we dispatch to carry out these duties. One of them returns with a great heap of wealth and then says, ‘This is for me and that is for you.’ When he is asked, ‘Where did you get this from?’ he replies, ‘It was given to me as a gift.’ Had he been truthful, would that gift not have reached him while he was sitting in his mother’s house or his father’s house?
By Him in whose hand is my soul, I never appoint a man over any task who then embezzles anything from it, except that he will come on the Day of Resurrection carrying it around his neck. So let a man beware lest he come on that Day with a camel bellowing on his neck, or a cow lowing, or a sheep bleating.’
He then said three times, ‘O Allah, have I conveyed?’
I said to Abū Ḥumayd, ‘Did you hear this directly from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’
He replied, ‘From the mouth of the Messenger of Allah straight to my ear.’
Through this same chain: Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Jarīr, Abū Muʿāwiyah, Abū Usāmah, and Wakīʿ all narrated from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from Abū Ḥumayd—from the Prophet ﷺ—words to the same effect.
Al-Bukhārī recorded it from Yūsuf, from Abū Usāmah (1).
