He was one of the great repositories of knowledge.

Abū Isḥāq al-Jūzajānī said, “I saw Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal delighted by al-Shaybānī’s ḥadith; he remarked, ‘He deserves that none of his narrations be left out.’”

Aḥmad ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Maryam reported from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn that he said, “Reliable, an authority.”

Abū Ḥātim said, “Trustworthy, truthful, sound in ḥadith.”

Aḥmad al-ʿIjlī said, “Reliable; one of the senior disciples of al-Shaʿbī.”

Al-Wāqidī and Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr maintained that he died in 129 AH, but this is a glaring error.

Abū Muʿāwiyah and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr said that he passed away in 139 AH, and this view is reasonable.

Al-Haytham ibn ʿAdī stated that he died two years before Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr assumed the caliphate, while al-Fallās and al-Tirmidhī placed his death in 138 AH.

Al-Bukhārī was furthest off the mark, claiming that he died in 141 or 142 AH.

I say: Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī and Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn both reported from him, yet there are roughly eighty years between their respective dates of death.

Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq informed us; Zayd ibn Yaḥyā the dealer informed us; Abū al-Qāsim Aḥmad ibn al-Mubārak informed us; ʿĀṣim ibn al-Ḥasan informed us; Abū ʿUmar ibn Mahdī narrated to us; al-Ḥusayn al-Maḥāmilī narrated to us; Yūsuf narrated to us; Jarīr narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dhakwān, from ʿUrwah, from Abū Ḥumayd, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man to collect the charity. When he returned he came with a large amount of wealth. The Prophet ﷺ sent someone to take it from him, but the man began to say, ‘This is for me and this is for you,’ separating it.

They asked, ‘Where did you get this from?’

He replied, ‘It was given to me as a gift.’

They brought what he had handed over to the Prophet ﷺ and related the incident to him. The Prophet ﷺ mounted the pulpit in anger, praised and glorified Allah, and then said, ‘What is the matter with…’”}
