- al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yaʿqūb al-Madani (M, 4)
An imam, hadith scholar, and trustworthy narrator, Abū Shibl al-Madani, a client (mawlā) of al-Ḥuraqa.
Al-Ḥuraqa is a clan of the Juhaynah tribe.
He transmitted from: Anas ibn Mālik; his father, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—an associate of Abū Hurayrah; Abū al-Sāʾib, the client of Hishām ibn Zuhrah; and Maʿbad ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik.
Among those who related from him were: Mālik, Shuʿbah, Sufyān, Ismāʿīl ibn Jaʿfar, al-Darāwardī, Ibn Isḥāq, Ibn ʿUyaynah, and others.
= Jaʿfar al-Razi, whose personal name was ʿIsa ibn Mahan. Ibn al-Madini said: “He used to mix up narrations.” Yahya (Ibn Maʿin) said: “He made mistakes,” and Ahmad (Ibn Hanbal) added: “He is not strong in hadith.” Abu Zurʿa declared: “He was often in error,” while Ibn Hibban remarked: “He is alone in reporting munkar (rejected) traditions from well-known narrators.”
His report clashes with the sound narration of Anas stating that “the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, performed qunut for a month and then abandoned it.”
Note: The qunut supplication commonly recited in the dawn (fajr) prayer is not meant for that place; its proper position is in the witr prayer.
Ahmad (1/199–200), Abu Dawud (1425), al-Tirmidhi (464), al-Nasaʾi (3/248), Ibn Majah (1178), al-Darimi (1/373), al-Tayalisi (1179) and al-Hakim (3/172) relate—through Abu al-Hawraʾ al-Saʿdi—that al-Hasan ibn ʿAli, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught me words to say in witr: ‘Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayt, wa ʿafini fiman ʿafayt, wa tawallani fiman tawallayt, wa barik li fima aʿtayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt; fa-innaka taqdi wa la yuqda ʿalayk; innahu la yadhillu man walayt, wa la yaʿizzu man ʿadayt; tabarakta rabbana wa taʿalayt.’ (O Allah, guide me with those You have guided, grant me well-being with those You have granted well-being, take me into Your care with those You have taken into Your care, bless for me what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed; for You decree and none decrees over You. He whom You befriend is never humiliated, and he whom You oppose is never honoured. Blessed and Exalted are You, our Lord.)”
The wording is that of Abu Dawud. Al-Tirmidhi graded the report hasan and added: “We know nothing better concerning qunut from the Prophet, peace be upon him.”
