84 – Layth ibn Abī Sulaym ibn Zunaym al-Umawī, their client * (4, kht, m tabaʿan) (1)
He was the ḥadīth authority of Kūfah and one of its prominent scholars, although his narrations are somewhat soft because his memory was imperfect.
A client of the household of Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb, he bore the kunya Abū Bakr. Some also called him Abū Bukayr al-Kūfī. There is disagreement over his father’s name, Abū Sulaym: some said it was Ayman, others Anas, and still others Ziyādah or ʿĪsā.
He was born after 60 AH, most likely during the reign of Yazīd.
He reported from Abū Burdah, al-Shaʿbī, Mujāhid, Ṭāwūs, ʿAṭāʾ, Nāfiʿ the client of Ibn ʿUmar, Shahr, ʿIkrimah, Zayd ibn Arṭāh, Ibn Abī Mulaykah, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Aswad, Ashʿath ibn Abī al-Shaʿthāʾ, and many others.
We have found no transmission of his from the junior Companions, yet he is counted among the minor Successors, for he was already a grown man while some Companions—such as Ibn Abī Awfā and Anas—were still alive.
Those who narrated from him include: al-Thawrī, Zāʾidah, Shuʿbah, Shaybān, Sharīk, Zuhayr, al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ, Abū ʿAwānah, Yaʿqūb al-Qummī, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, Ziyād al-Bakkāʾī, Ibn Idrīs, al-Muḥāribī, Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī, Ibn ʿUlayyah, Jarīr al-Ḍabbī, Ḥassān ibn Ibrāhīm, Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth, Dhawwād ibn ʿUlbah, Abū Badr al-Sakūnī, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād, ʿAbd al-Wārith, al-Qāsim ibn Mālik, Abū Muʿāwiyah, Ibn Fuḍayl, and a great many others.
