and Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh likewise said, “Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl was standing in prayer when he died.” When the matter was mentioned to Ibn ʿAwn and people began extolling Ḥumayd’s merits, Ibn ʿAwn remarked, “He is now in need of whatever good deeds he has already sent ahead.”
Ḥumayd’s grandson—Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq—stated, “My grandfather died in Jumādā al-Ūlā, in the year 140 AH.” I say: this is a mistake.
Quraysh ibn Anas and Ibn Saʿd maintained that he died in 142 AH, and al-Haytham said the same.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal reported from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd that “Ḥumayd died in 142—or 143—AH, toward the end of the year.”
Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Bīkandī related—from Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl—that he said, “My father died in 143 AH, and I never heard anything from him for I was only ten years old or thereabouts.”
Al-Ziyādī likewise narrated from Ibrāhīm: “My father died in the year three, and he had reached seventy-five years of age.” Khalīfa and al-Fallas also held that it was the year three.
Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Murdāwī informed us in 692 AH; Muḥammad ibn Khalaf the jurist informed us in 616 AH; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad the ḥāfiẓ told us in 666 AH at the frontier; Abū Masʿūd Muḥammad and Abū’l-Fatḥ Aḥmad told us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad al-Sūdharjānī informed us; ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Maylah, the specialist in inheritance law, informed us; Abū ʿAmr ibn Ḥakīm narrated to us; Abū Ḥātim Muḥammad ibn Idrīs al-Ḥanẓalī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, the judge of Basra, narrated to me, saying, “Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl narrated to me, from Anas …”
