Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

70 – al-Zubayr ibn ʿAdī Abū ʿAdī al-Hamdānī al-Yāmī * (ʿ)
An erudite and trustworthy authority, Abū ʿAdī al-Hamdānī, al-Yāmī, a Kufan who later served as judge of Rayy.

He transmitted hadith from Anas ibn Mālik, Abū Wāʾil Shaqīq, al-Ḥārith al-Aʿwar, Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī, and Muṣʿab ibn Saʿd.

Narrators who reported from him include Mālik ibn Mighwal, Misʿar, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Bishr ibn al-Ḥusayn, and others.

Aḥmad [ibn Ḥanbal] regarded him as reliable. He was of upright character and firmly committed to the Sunnah.

Al-ʿIjlī said, “Trustworthy and firmly reliable, one of the leading pupils of Ibrāhīm [al-Nakhaʿī].”

He once accompanied Qutaybah al-Bāhilī, whereupon Ibrāhīm advised him, “Fear Allah; do not let yourself be killed alongside Qutaybah.” (1)

It is said that he died in 131 AH.
