Those who transmitted from him include Misʿar, Abū ʿAwanah, Hushaym, and others.
Abū Ḥātim said, “In my estimation he is acceptable.”
Al-Nasāʾī remarked, “He is not strong.”
Ibn Khuzaymah said, “His ḥadith is not to be used as evidence.”
I say: al-Bukhārī did cite him as a supporting narrator.
Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr reported from Ibn Maʿīn, “There is no harm in him,” yet Ibn Maʿīn also said, “He is weak.”
Abū Ḥātim likewise said, “He is not relied upon.”
I add: He rose in arms alongside an Umayyad nephew of his at the very beginning of the ʿAbbāsid rule, but the effort came to nothing. ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlī, the uncle of al-Saffāḥ, prevailed and killed ʿUmar in 133 AH.
Al-Bukhārī has suspended a report of his in the Ṣaḥīḥ (1), in the story of Jurayj and the shepherd, saying: “ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah related from his father….”
ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ ibn Badrān and Yūsuf ibn Aḥmad told us:
Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir informed us; Saʿīd ibn al-Bannāʾ informed us; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad informed us; Abū Ṭāhir al-Mukhalliṣ narrated to us; al-Baghawī narrated to us; al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd al-Narsī narrated to us; Abū ʿAwanah narrated to us, from ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Change the grey (of your hair) and do not imitate the Jews and the Christians.”
Al-Tirmidhī declared the ḥadith sound (2) through the chain of Abū ʿAwanah.
