or fifteen years old.
Muṭayyin (1) said: He died in 137 AH.
I say: On that reckoning, he lived for roughly ninety-one years.
42 – Yazīd ibn Abī Sumayyah, Abū Ṣakhr al-Āylī * (d)
A ḥadith scholar known as Abū Ṣakhr al-Āylī.
He narrated from: Ibn ʿUmar, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥman, and ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
Those who transmitted from him include: Ḥusayn ibn Rustum, ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn ʿUmar, Saʿdān ibn Sālim and the other men of Ayla, Hishām ibn Saʿd, and others.
He was part of a delegation to ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and was counted among the truthful scholars who wept much.
Abū Zurʿah declared him reliable.
Al-Wāqidī said: “He was one of the devoted worshippers—he would pray the whole night and weep—and there was a Jewish woman in the house with him who would weep out of compassion for him.”
On one occasion he supplicated, “O Allah, this Jewish woman has wept out of mercy for me, though her religion differs from mine; You are even more entitled to show me mercy.”
43 – ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥman ibn ʿAwf al-Zuhrī ** (4)
The Madinan jurist, he transmitted copiously from his father.
(1) Pronounced with a ḍamma on the mīm, a fatḥa on the ṭāʾ, and a doubled, fatḥa-bearing yāʾ, following the same vocalic pattern as muʿaẓẓam. It is the sobriquet of the eminent ḥadīth scholar Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Sulaymān al-Ḥaḍramī al-Kūfī. By contrast, Muṭayyin, treated as an active participle, is the nickname of ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad, a teacher of Ibn Mandah, as stated in al-Tabsīr, p. 1296. Al-Fīrūzābādī, author of al-Qāmūs, mistakenly conflated the first form with the morphological pattern of the second.
