Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, Ziyād al-Bakkāʾī, ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim, Ibn Idrīs, Ibn Numayr, and a large number of others.
Among his own generation, Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid also reported from him.
Shuʿbah said, “He was a rāffāʿ,” meaning that he would take reports which were merely the words of Companions and raise them to the Prophet.
Ibn Fuḍayl remarked, “He was one of the leading imams of the Shiʿa.”
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “He was not a ḥāfiẓ.”
ʿAbbās related from Yaḥyā that “his ḥadīth is not to be taken as evidence.”
ʿUthmān al-Dārimī transmitted from Yaḥyā: “He is not strong.”
Abū Yaʿlā likewise related from Yaḥyā: “Weak in ḥadīth.”
Al-ʿIjlī, however, said, “His ḥadīth is permissible to transmit.”
In his later years he needed to be prompted, whereas his brother Burd was reliable.
ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah reported from Jarīr: “He had a better memory than ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib.”
Ibn Maʿīn commented, “There is little to choose between the two of them!”
When Ibn al-Mubārak mentioned him he said, “Ignore him.”
Ibn Mahdī declared, “Of Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib and Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, Layth is the best of the three.”
Abū Zurʿah said, “Soft.”
Abū Ḥātim said, “Not strong.”
Abū Dāwūd stated, “I do not know of anyone who completely abandoned his ḥadīth.”
Al-Jawzajānī said, “I heard the scholars deem his reports weak.”
Ibn ʿAdī observed, “He was among the Shiʿa of Kūfah, and though weak, his ḥadīth is still written down.”
Al-Bukhārī suspended one brief narration from him, quoting: “Jarīr said, on the authority of Yazīd: ‘al-Qassiyyah are striped garments.’”
Muslim also recorded a narration from him, but only by pairing him with another transmitter.
Shuʿbah himself narrated from him, despite Shuʿbah’s renowned expertise in evaluating narrators.
ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim—who is not a decisive authority—reported from Shuʿbah that he said, “I do not mind if, when I write a ḥadīth from Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, I do not write it from anyone else.”
Al-Tirmidhī included his reports and judged the isnād coming through Hushaym to be ḥasan (fair).
