(1) In his Mizan the author writes: “He is saduq (reliable); his reports are salih and hasan, though they fall short of the highest rank of sahih. Replying to Ibn al-Qattan, who called the man mustadʿaf (weak), he said: ‘He is neither mustadʿaf nor daʿif. Admittedly, he is not in the category of the trustworthy narrators such as al-Zuhri and those of his class.’” In al-Taqrib he is graded “thiqah (trustworthy), although he may err at times.”
The introduction to al-Fath (p. 431) states: “Ahmad, Abu Hatim and al-ʿIjli deemed him trustworthy, whereas Ibn Maʿin, al-Nasaʾi and ʿUthman al-Darimi declared him weak because of his narration from ʿIkrimah concerning the beast.” Al-ʿIjli added: “They criticised him only for that hadith,” namely his report from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbas: “Whoever has intercourse with a beast, execute him and the beast.”
Al-Hafiz observes: “Al-Bukhari did not transmit any of his material on the authority of ʿIkrimah; instead, he cited four of his hadith from Anas, one from Saʿid ibn Jubayr on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbas, and one from Saʿid al-Maqburi. The remaining compilers accepted his narrations.”
