Those who transmitted from him include: Bukayr ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ashajj—despite his seniority—, Shuʿbah, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, Ibn Jurayj, Mālik, Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān, Ibn Abī al-Zinād, Ḥafṣ ibn Maysarah, the two Sufyans, Zuhayr, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Darāwardī, Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abī Kathīr, Wuhaib, Abū Qurrah Mūsā ibn Ṭāriq, Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī, Fuḍayl ibn Sulaymān, Muḥammad ibn Fulayḥ, Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUqbah, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, Abū Ḍamrah al-Laythī, Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl, Zuhayr ibn Muḥammad al-Marwazī, Abū Badr al-Sakūnī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ al-Makkī, Abū Hammām Muḥammad ibn al-Zibraqān, Yaʿqūb ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qārī, and a great many others.
Ibn Saʿd said: “He was trustworthy but related only a few ḥadiths”—so it appears here. In another passage, which seems more accurate, he wrote: “He was trustworthy, firmly reliable, and transmitted many ḥadiths.”
Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mundhir reported from Maʿn that he said: “Whenever Mālik was asked, ‘Whose work on the Prophet’s campaigns should we record?’ he would reply, ‘You must take (Maghāzī Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah), for he is trustworthy.’”
Ibn al-Mundhir also said: “Mutarrif, Maʿn, and Muḥammad ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk related to me that whenever Mālik was questioned about the campaign literature, he would say, ‘Hold fast to the campaigns of the righteous man Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, for they are the soundest of the works on the campaigns.’”
He further reported: “I heard Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah say: I heard Mālik declare, ‘Take up (Maghāzī Mūsā), for he is a trustworthy man. He undertook the compilation late in life so that he might record only those who had actually accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; he did not expand the material the way others have.’”
I (the author) say: This is a veiled critique of Ibn Isḥāq, for there is no doubt that Ibn Isḥāq was expansive and exceedingly long-winded
