Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

It is related that one of the provincial governors once sent for Abū Ḥāzim. When Abū Ḥāzim arrived, al-Zuhri, al-Ifriqī and others were present. The governor said, “Speak, Abū Ḥāzim.” He replied, “The best rulers are those who love the scholars, while the worst scholars are those who love the rulers.”

Abū Ḥāzim also said, “If you notice your Lord repeatedly bestowing favors upon you while you go on disobeying Him, then beware of Him. And if you love a brother for Allah’s sake, limit your worldly dealings with him.”

Muʿṣab ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Zubayrī said, “Abū Ḥāzim’s lineage was Persian and his mother was Roman. He was a client of Banū Layth; he was fair-complexioned, broad-hipped, and cross-eyed.”

Ibn Saʿd said, “He used to give admonitions in the Mosque of Medina after the dawn and the afternoon prayers.” He added, “He died during the caliphate of Abū Jaʿfar, sometime after 140 AH. He was reliable and narrated many hadiths.”

Al-Fallas and al-Tirmidhī said, “He died in 133 AH.”
Khalīfa said, “In 135 AH.”
Al-Haytham said, “In 140 AH.”
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said, “In 144 AH.”

I (the author) say: The last person to transmit from him was Anas ibn ʿIyāḍ al-Laythī, and his narrations are found in the six canonical books.

ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim told us; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥākim told us; ʿAlī ibn al-Musallam the jurist told us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Khaṭīb told us; Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ṣaydāwī told us; Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAbbād al-Ṣaffār in Ramla told us; Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā told us; Sufyān reported, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl ibn Saʿd, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“If something occurs to a man during his prayer, let him say, ‘Subḥān Allāh’ (Glory be to Allah); clapping is only for women, and tasbīḥ is for men.”
