Waqqās, who was in that detachment, loosed an arrow—it was the very first arrow ever shot in Allah’s cause.
That same day two men slipped away from the unbelievers and joined the Muslims: al-Miqdād ibn ʿAmr al-Bahrānī, an ally of Banū Zuhrah, and ʿUtbah ibn Ghazwān al-Māzinī, an ally of Banū ʿAbd Manāf. Both were already Muslims but had set out with the idolaters only in order to link up with the believers.
The Expedition of Buwāṭ and the Expedition of al-ʿUshayrah

The Expedition of Buwāṭ:
In Rabīʿ al-Awwal the Prophet ﷺ marched out on campaign, leaving al-Sāʾib, the brother of ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn, in charge of Madinah. He advanced until he reached Buwāṭ, on the slopes of Mount Raḍwā, then turned back without encountering any fighting. -
The Expedition of al-ʿUshayrah:
In Jumādā al-Ūlā he set out again, appointing Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Asad as governor of the city. He proceeded until he reached al-ʿUshayrah, where he stayed for several days and concluded a non-aggression pact with Banū Mudlij. Afterward he returned and remained in Madinah for a time. Al-ʿUshayrah lies in the valley of Yanbuʿ.
Yūnus relates from Ibn Isḥāq: Yazīd ibn Muḥammad ibn Khushaym told me on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Qurazī, who said: Your father, Muḥammad ibn Khuthaym al-Muḥāribī, narrated to me from ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir, who said, “I and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib were companions on the Expedition of al-ʿUshayrah in the valley of Yanbuʿ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived there he remained for a month and made peace…”
