With this same chain of transmission, Abū Nuʿaym said: Ibn Ḥayyān narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; Aḥmad al-Dawraqī narrated to us; Saʿīd Abū ʿUthmān narrated to me; I heard Ibn ʿUyaynah say:

Ibn Shubruma related: “Kurz asked his Lord to grant him al-ism al-aʿẓam (the Supreme Name), on the condition that he would never use it to seek anything of this world. The request was granted, whereupon he asked for strength to complete three full recitations of the Qur’an every day and night.”

Through the same chain, Ibn Mālik narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Shurayḥ narrated to us; Ibn Fuḍayl narrated—either from his father or directly from himself—that: “Whenever Kurz went out, he enjoined right conduct, whereupon the people would beat him until he lost consciousness.”

Ibn Fuḍayl also reported from his father: “For forty years Kurz never lifted his gaze to the sky. He kept a staff beside his prayer-niche and would lean on it whenever drowsiness overtook him.”

Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Dawraqī said: Jarīr ibn Ziyād ibn Kurz al-Ḥārithī told me, from Shujāʿ ibn Ṣabīḥ, the freedman of Kurz ibn Wabarah:

Abū Sulaymān the clerk informed me, saying, “I travelled with Kurz to Mecca. One day, when it was time to depart, he was missing, so the group scattered to look for him. I found him in a hollow, praying in the intense heat of the day, while a cloud shaded him. He said to me, ‘Keep this to yourself,’ and bound me by an oath.”

Aḥmad added: Jarīr also narrated to me, from al-Naḍr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, that Rawḍah, Kurz’s maidservant, said:

“I once asked, ‘From where does Kurz obtain what he spends?’ She replied, ‘He used to say to me, “Rawḍah, whenever you need something, take it from this niche.” So I would take whatever I wanted.’”

Ibn Shubruma recited:
“If you wished, you could be like Kurz in his devotion,
Or like Ibn Ṭāriq circling the Sacred House in the sanctuary.
Fear of the Almighty kept both men from life’s delights,
And they hastened toward triumph and noble grace.”

Fuḍayl ibn Ghazwān said: “Kurz would pray until his feet became swollen; then he would dig a small pit—meaning beneath his feet.”

It was also said: “Kurz never halted at a place without first building a mosque there and performing his prayers within it.”
