20 – Kurz, Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wabarah al-Ḥārithī, the Kufan *
The ascetic and exemplar, Abū ʿAbd Allāh Kurz ibn Wabarah al-Ḥārithī, originally from Kūfa, later settled in Jurjān and came to be counted among its foremost figures. He had marched there as a combatant in the year 98 AH with Yazīd ibn al-Muhallab, and in that city Kurz built a mosque close to the spot where he was eventually buried.
He narrated from Anas ibn Mālik, al-Rabīʿ ibn Khuthaym, Nuʿaym ibn Abī Hind, Ṭāwūs, Ṭāriq ibn Shihāb, Mujāhid, ʿAṭāʾ, and others.
Those who transmitted from him include Abū Ṭaybah ʿĪsā ibn Sulaymān al-Dārimī, ʿUbayd Allāh al-Waṣṣāfī, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Mukhtār al-Tamīmī, Ibn Shubruma, Muḥammad ibn al-Naḍr al-Ḥārithī, Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl ibn ʿAṭiyyah, Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl, and many more.
Abū Nuʿaym the ḥāfiẓ said: “He lived in Jurjān and enjoyed wide-spread renown for piety and devoted worship.”
Isḥāq al-Ṣaffār informed us, saying: Yūsuf the ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Abū al-Makārim al-Tamīmī narrated to us; Abū ʿAlī al-Muqrī narrated to us; Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; Abū Bakr ibn Mālik narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad narrated to us; Shurayḥ ibn Yūnus narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl narrated from his father, who said:
“I entered Kurz’s house and, next to the place where he prayed, I saw a small hollow he had filled with straw and covered with a cloak—evidence of how long he remained standing in worship. Over the course of every day and night he would recite the entire Qur’an three times.” (1)
