“Are your lice troubling you (1)?”) — in the matter of the fidya (compensatory offering).
Al-Shāfiʿī then remarked, “Mālik erred in this; the expert preservers have transmitted it from ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jazarī, from Mujāhid, from Ibn Abī Laylā.”
I say: It was also narrated from Mālik, with Mujāhid explicitly included in the chain, by Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān, Ibn Wahb, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī, and Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan the jurist, and all of them heard it from him early on.
Muslim and others produced the ḥadīth as well, through the report of Ibn ʿUyaynah, from ʿAbd al-Karīm, with an unbroken chain.
Ibn Saʿd and Khalīfa said, “ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jazarī was a cousin of Khuṣayf — Lahḥā (2).”
Ibn Saʿd also said, “ʿAbd al-Karīm is reliable and relates many ḥadīths.”
Ibn Maʿīn said, “Reliable.” Al-Nasāʾī reported it exactly so, from Muʿāwiya ibn Ṣāliḥ, from him.
Al-Kalābādhī stated, “His narrations appear in the exegesis of ‘Recite!’ as well as in Sūrat al-Nisāʾ and Sūrat al-Ḥajj (3).”
Abū ʿArūbah al-Ḥarrānī said, “He is firmly established in the view of those versed in transmission; he was Khudramī and later settled in Ḥarrān.”
Khudramah is a village in al-Yamāmah; those hailing from it are so denominated.
Al-Ḥumaydī, on the authority of Sufyān, said, “ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Mālik narrated to us, and he was a ḥāfiẓ (expert memoriser).”
