will never cease to be a surviving remnant among your people for as long as any of you remain.’
He (Hishām) said, “I do not recall that, O Commander of the Believers.”
Al-Manṣūr replied, “Then why do you hesitate about it?”
He answered, “Allah has never accustomed me, in telling the truth, to anything but good.”
Yūnus ibn Bukayr narrates from Hishām, who said: “I saw Ibn ʿUmar; his hair was a thick lock that reached the tips of his shoulders.”
ʿAlī ibn Mushir relates from Hishām: “I saw Ibn al-Zubayr: when he prayed ʿAṣr we lined up behind him and he led us in two rakʿahs. I also saw him ascend the pulpit with a staff in his hand; he greeted the people with salām, sat down, and the muʾadhdhins gave the call. When they had finished he stood, leaned on the staff, and delivered the sermon.”
ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī al-Muqaddamī reports from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah that he entered upon al-Manṣūr and said, “O Commander of the Believers! Settle my debt for me.”
He asked, “How much is your debt?”
He replied, “One hundred thousand.”
He said, “With all your learning in jurisprudence and your merit you incur a debt of one hundred thousand and have nothing with which to repay it?!”
He answered, “O Commander of the Believers! Some young men of our household have grown up and I wanted to establish them, so I acquired houses for them and hosted wedding banquets. I feared that rumours about them might circulate which I would dislike, so I did what I did trusting in Allah and in the Commander of the Believers. (1)”
He (al-Manṣūr) repeated, “One hundred thousand,” amazed at the sum, and then said, “We have ordered that you be given ten thousand.”
He (Hishām) said, “O Commander of the Believers! Then give me what you have decreed while you are content, for I heard my father relate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ‘Whoever gives a gift while pleased to do so, it is blessed for both the giver and the recipient.’”
He replied, “Then I am content with it.”
This is a mursal report. (2)
