Al-Bukhari cites this report in his Ṣaḥīḥ.
Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān said: Nāfiʿ narrated to us that ʿAbd Allāh informed him that, in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the mosque was built of sun-dried bricks, its roof was woven palm fronds, and its columns were palm trunks. Abū Bakr added nothing to it. ʿUmar enlarged it, but rebuilt it on the same pattern that had existed in the Prophet’s lifetime—sun-dried bricks and palm fronds—and he restored its columns as wooden posts. ʿUthmān, however, expanded it greatly: he constructed its wall of hewn, plastered stone, made its pillars of carved stone, and roofed it with teak. Al-Bukhari also recorded this narration.
Hammād ibn Salamah related from Abū Sinān, from Yaʿlā ibn Shaddād, from ʿUbādah that the Anṣār gathered some money, brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Build up this mosque and embellish it. How long shall we go on praying beneath these palm branches?” He replied, “I have no wish to differ from my brother Moses: a shelter like the shelter of Moses.”
Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, commenting on the phrase “like the shelter of Moses,” said: “When a man raised his hand he could touch the shelter,” meaning the roof.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Badr narrated from Qays ibn Ṭalq ibn ʿAlī, from his father, who said: “I helped the Prophet ﷺ build the mosque of Madinah. He would say, ‘Bring al-Yamāmī close to the clay, for he is the best of you at building with it.’”
Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The mosque that was founded upon god-fearing piety is this mosque of mine.” Muslim records a longer version of this report.
