A number of scholars narrated to us, through Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṣaydalanī; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād informed us in person; Abū Nuʿaym informed us; Abū al-Qāsim al-Ṭabarānī related to us; Aḥmad ibn al-Qāsim ibn Musāwir narrated to us; Khālid ibn Khidāsh narrated to us; Ḥammād narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn ʿAtīq, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, from Ayyūb al-Sikhtiyānī, from Yūsuf ibn Māhak, from Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām, who said:

Al-Tirmidhi (no. 1232), Abu Dawud (no. 3503) and al-Nasa’i, 7/289, likewise report it through the chain of Abu Bishr – Yusuf b. Mahak, with an equally sound isnad. A parallel narration from Abd Allah b. Amr is found in Ahmad (nos. 6628, 6671), Abu Dawud (no. 3504), al-Nasa’i, 7/288, al-Tayalisi (no. 2257) and Ibn Majah (no. 2188); its chain is hasan (reliable).
(2) The margin of the original manuscript ends the biographical entry with the following note: “Note: Abu Umar Ibn Abd al-Barr states in his book al-Tamhid that Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani used to sell hides in Basra, hence the epithet al-Sakhtiyani.”
* He was killed in 128 AH (745 CE) together with al-Harith b. Shurayj in an uprising against the Umayyads.
