Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Mālik for his precision, and ʿUbayd Allah for the strength of his memory. (1)

Damrah related from Ibn Shawdhub who said:
“Ayyub used to lead the people of his mosque in prayer during Ramadan. In each rakʿah he recited roughly thirty verses, and between the two tarawīḥ pauses he prayed on his own, again reciting about thirty verses.

He would himself call out to the people, ‘Prayer!’ Then he would lead them in witr, supplicating with the Qurʾanic prayers while those behind him said āmīn. At the close he would invoke blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and say: ‘O Allah, employ us in following his sunnah, inspire us with his guidance, and make us leaders for the God-fearing,’ after which he would prostrate.

When the prayer was finished, he would make further supplications.”

Hammād ibn Zayd said, “Ayyub is, to me, the finest person I have ever sat with and the most committed to the sunnah.”

Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir al-Ḍubaʿī reported from Sallām ibn Abī Muṭīʿ:
“Ayyub once saw a man from the people of innovation and remarked, ‘I can see humiliation written on his face,’ then he recited, ‘Anger from their Lord and humiliation shall befall them’ (al-Aʿrāf 7:152). He added, ‘This is true of every fabricator.’

He used to call the sectarians Khārijites, saying, ‘The Khārijites differ in name but are united upon the sword.’

One of those innovators once said to him, ‘Abu Bakr, may I ask you a word?’ Ayyub turned away, repeating twice, ‘Not even half a word.’”

Jarīr al-Ḍabbī narrated from Ashʿath: “Ayyub was the jihbidh (master assayer) of the scholars.” (2)

Sallām ibn Abī Muṭīʿ said, “Ayyub was the most learned of them in matters of religion.”

And Hishām ibn Ḥassān reported that Ayyub al-Sakhtiyānī performed the pilgrimage forty times.
