Al-Ḥākim said: He was the judge of the Prophet’s Sanctuary and its mufti in his day: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd ibn Qays ibn Qahd ibn ʿAmr ibn Thaʿlabah ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Yazīd ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Ghanm ibn Mālik ibn al-Najjār.
Khalīfah stated in al-Ṭabaqāt: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd ibn Qays ibn Qahd ibn Sahl ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Ghanm ibn Mālik ibn al-Najjār, Abū Saʿīd.
Abū Aḥmad recorded in al-Kunā: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd ibn Qays ibn ʿAmr ibn Sahl ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Zayd ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Ghanm. He then said: “It is also said that he is the son of Saʿīd ibn Qays ibn Qahd, yet the notion that he was the brother of Saʿd, ʿAbd Rabbih, and Saʿīd is not sound.”
I say: Among those who maintained that his grandfather was Qays ibn ʿAmr ibn Sahl ibn Thaʿlabah are Aḥmad and Ibn Maʿīn.
Muṣʿab said: “His grandfather was Qays ibn Qahd ibn Qays.” Aḥmad ibn Abī Khaythamah replied, “Muṣʿab erred, for Qays ibn Qahd is the grandfather of Abū Maryam ʿAbd al-Ghaffār ibn al-Qāsim al-Anṣārī, the Kufan.” He added, “Both of them were Companions.”
It is firmly established that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The best of the dwellings of the Anṣār is the dwelling of the Banū al-Najjār.” ⦗1⦘
Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd met ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar. This was stated by al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbdillāh, who added: “He heard from Anas, al-Sāʾib, Abū Umāmah, ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah, and Yūsuf ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Salām. He also heard from Ibn al-Musayyib and, after him, the remaining jurists of the Seven, and he kept their company.”
Four of the Followers transmitted from him: Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī, and ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿUmar.
