The first year after the Hijrah:
Al-Bukhārī records in his Ṣaḥīḥ—through al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—that when the Muslims in Madinah learned that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had set out, they would go early each morning to the lava plain, waiting for him until the scorching sun drove them back. One day, after they had gone home, a Jewish man climbed a tower-fort and caught sight of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions, their white garments shimmering in the heat haze. ʿUrwah told me that on the road the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met al-Zubayr with a caravan of Muslim traders returning from Syria; al-Zubayr thereupon clothed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abū Bakr in two white outfits.
The Jew could not hold back and cried out, “People of Arabia, here is the good fortune you have been awaiting!” The Muslims rushed for their arms and went out to receive the Prophet on the far side of the lava plain. He turned with them to the right until he halted in the quarter of Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf on a Monday in Rabīʿ al-Awwal. Abū Bakr stood before the people, and those who did not yet know the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered around him. When the sun fell upon the Prophet ﷺ, Abū Bakr moved to shade him with his cloak, and only then did the crowd recognise the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself.
He stayed with Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf for a little over ten nights and laid the foundations of their mosque. Then he mounted his she-camel, the people walking all about him, until she knelt at the spot destined to be the mosque—where that very day some Muslim men were already praying. It was a former date-drying yard
