- al-Maḥāmilī went on to say, “Salm ibn Junādah narrated to us, Ibn Idrīs narrated to us, Ḥuṣayn narrated to us, from Shaqīq, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
‘We used to say: as-salāmu ʿalā Allāh (peace be upon Allah).’
He replied, ‘Do not say, “peace be upon Allah,” for Allah Himself is Peace. Rather, say: at-taḥiyyātu lillāh wa’ṣ-ṣalawātu wa’ṭ-ṭayyibāt, as-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuhā’n-nabiyy wa raḥmatu’llāhi wa barakātuh…’ and he related the remainder of the report (1).
191 – al-Qasrī, Abū al-Haytham Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd * (D)
The distinguished governor, Abū al-Haytham Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd ibn Asad ibn Kurz al-Bajalī, known as al-Qasrī, originally of Damascus. He served as governor of the two Iraqs under Hishām, and before that held the governorship of Mecca for al-Walīd ibn ʿAbd al-Malik and subsequently for Sulaymān.
He narrated from his own father, and among those who transmitted from him are Sayyār Abū al-Ḥakam, Ismāʿīl ibn Awsat al-Bajalī, Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, and Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl.
His narrations are few. One of his reports is found in the Musnad of Aḥmad, and in the Sunan of Abū Dāwūd there is a ḥadith that he transmitted from his grandfather Yazīd, who was a Companion.
(1) All its narrators are trustworthy. The report is also found in al-Bukhari, 11/12, Book of Seeking Permission, chapter “As-Salam is one of the names of Allah”; Muslim, no. 402, Book of Prayer, chapter on the tashahhud; Abu Dawud, no. 968; al-Nasaʾi, 2/240; al-Tirmidhi, no. 289; and Ibn Majah, no. 899, all through several chains from Abu Waʾil Shaqiq ibn Salamah, from Ibn Masʿud, who said: “When we prayed with the Prophet ﷺ we used to say: ‘Peace be upon Allah before His servants; peace be upon Jibril; peace be upon Mikail; peace be upon So-and-so.’ When the Prophet ﷺ finished the prayer he turned toward us and said: ‘Allah Himself is as-Salam (Peace). When any of you is seated in the prayer, let him say: al-tahiyyatu lillah, waʾs-salawatu waʾt-tayyibat; as-salam ʿalayka ayyuhaʾn-nabiyyu wa rahmatuʾllahi wa barakatuh; as-salam ʿalayna wa ʿala ʿibadiʾllahiʾs-salihin. Whoever says this reaches every righteous servant in heaven and on earth. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.’ After that he may choose whatever supplication he wishes.”
