ʿAbthar ibn al-Qāsim, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs, ʿAbbād ibn al-ʿAwwām, ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim, ʿImrān ibn ʿUyaynah, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, and a great many others.
He was counted among the foremost Imams of transmitted tradition.
Abū Ḥātim related from Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal: “Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is reliable, trustworthy, and one of the senior masters of hadith.”
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said, “Reliable.”
Aḥmad al-ʿIjlī stated, “A Kufan, trustworthy, firmly grounded in hadith. In his later years he settled in the town of al-Mubārak, and the scholars of Wāsiṭ are the people who narrated from him the most.”
Ibn Ḥātim said: “I asked Abū Zurʿah, ‘Is Ḥuṣayn a decisive authority (ḥujjah)?’ He replied, ‘Yes, by Allah.’”
Abū Ḥātim also said, “Reliable in hadith,” adding, “but toward the end of his life his memory deteriorated.”
Al-Nasāʾī remarked, “He changed.”
Yazīd ibn Hārūn said, “I sought out hadith while Ḥuṣayn was still alive; they would be read to him, but he had forgotten them.” It is likewise reported from Yazīd that he said, “Ḥuṣayn became confused.”
ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī and others, however, maintained, “He did not become confused.”
I say: The compilers of the sound collections relied upon him. He is stronger than ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr and Simāk ibn Ḥarb, and no less than Abū Isḥāq. It is astonishing that Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Bukhārī, al-ʿUqaylī, and Ibn ʿAdī hastened to cite Ḥuṣayn in their critical works.
It was also said that he used to dye his hair with henna.
Hushaym reported: “He lived to be ninety-three; he was older than al-Aʿmash and close in age to Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī.”
I add: it is mentioned that he attended the wedding of Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir’s father to Manṣūr’s mother.
ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim narrated from Ḥuṣayn who said, “The news of al-Ḥusayn’s killing reached us, and we remained …”
